Mike Smith completed a hat-trick of National 50k wins by taking the title at a sizzling Stockport; temperatures not far off 90 (in real units) kept his time to a tantalising 41 seconds outside 5 hours as he overhauled Chris Berwick (who last won in 1990) turning a half-way deficit of 2:30 into a winning margin of 5:11. Coventry retained the team trophy as the field halved in size between the start and the finish.

Please take this as a notification of the Meeting. There is only one nomination for each of the Officers, who will be declared elected unopposed. Sub-Committee Chairmen, etc., may be nominated on the day; it would be particularly helpful to receive a nomination for Minutes Secretary! 50  19/1/2004 No Nihill Shield Trip to Dublin in 2004

Because of a clash of dates with the English Schools regional and inter-county events, the R.W.A. will not be sending a team to the Dublin Grand Prix on the 27th June. This was a difficult decision for the Coaching & Development Sub-Committee, who realise that it will cause disappointment amonf the many young walkers who were hoping to take the first steps along the path of international representation. It was felt, however, that, important though that experience may be, it is even more important to build upon the developing schools' base at home.

The Sub-Committee is looking for a way of replacing the Dublin trip this year and hopes that the clash, largely caused by the change in the Irish date to accommodate international fixtures, can be avoided in 2005.

There will still be a Nihill Shield match in conjuntion with the R.W.A. Younger Age Group Championships at Leamington on the 20th March; selections will be made following the Molly Barnet walks on the 6th March.

22/7/2004

52  1/6/2004 Excellent performances at the Inter-Counties A strong turn-out at the Inter-Counties Championships at Bedford on the 31st May was matched by some excellent performances, paticularly by the younger walkers.
